Washington to Syrian Opposition: Geneva 2 Us Advantage

di Redazione

The US administration informed those concerned in the so-called Syrian opposition – especially the so-called National Coalition and the Muslim Brotherhood – that negotiations with the Syrian regime and attending the Geneva 2 conference is in the US’s interest.

In light of the poor tentative US-Russian agreement in holding an international conference in Geneva due June to solve the Syrian crisis, disparities among Syrian oppositions resurfaced as US pressures force these groups to facilitate its mission in forming a delegation of the Syrian opposition in Geneva.

The so-called National Coalition witnessed major dissimilarities in agreeing upon a unified delegation. While everyone in the Syrian opposition wishes to attend the Geneva conference, they refused the coalition and pro-US and Western Syrian oppositions funded by Qatar and Saudi Arabia monopolizing the delegation.
The Opposition’s Coordination Committee has its own delegation it already elected, and it seems that it is undergoing minor amendments that fairly distribute parties among each other, especially regarding the Kurd representation having good ties with Russia and Iran.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia, through its Intelligence Chief Bandar Bin Sultan Bin Abdelaziz, called on opposition figures close to the Coalition to visit Riyadh in order to inform them of the US decision to hand over the Syrian file to Saudi Arabia and Qatar terminated from this role.
Bandar requested everyone to back off from al-Nusra Front and the Muslim Brotherhood so that the Saudi aid to the opposition can continue. He further told his guests of the Saudi objective in agreeing upon a unified delegation soon or else they would be forced to a delegation like they were forced in November 2012 in Doha to form the so-called “National Coalition” and assign Ghassan Hitto in their session last March.

It appears that the US is somehow lost in managing the Syrian oppositions’ disagreements and division, expressing annoyance from the National Coordination Committee that will attend Geneva.
Currently, there are talks of assigning 15 figures to represent the opposition, while the US attempts on forcing militants from the armed groups to attend led by Salim Idris. These armed groups refuse to go to Geneva, whereas al-Nusra Front does not recognize Idris’s leadership to begin with.

The Front refuses to go to Geneva, the Syrian file is not in Qatar’s hands anymore, and the Saudi Arabia tries to weaken the Muslim Brotherhood control over the Syrian opposition, if not annihilating it. Amidst this fuss and commotion, the relation between the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Nusra Front appears evident.
Furthermore, Qatar and Turkey seek to maintain an effective role in the Syrian file after leading the war on the regime for two years with no results whatsoever.

However, the Syrian opposition deliberates that Turkey is the reason behind kindling the Syrian flame, in which it gave endless promises to intervene and help. Turkey finds itself powerless to respond to Damascus after being officially and publically accused of the Rayhanah explosions, which weakens Turkey’s authority and demeans its effect on Syrian oppositions.
