Iranian Spokesman: Battlefield Conditions Improving for Syrian Gov’t

(FNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi rejected establishment of a transitional government in Syria, and said battlefield conditions are changing in the interest of the Syrian government.

“My personal view is that we should focus on the 2014 presidential election, because had establishment of a transitional government (in Syria) been possible it would have been formed by now”, Araqchi said on Sunday.

Meantime, he underlined that Iran is not opposed to the formation of a transitional government and would not hinder such moves, but “the point is that the status quo in Syria shows that no important development will happen in the country until 2014”.

“Of course, the (battle)field conditions are changing in the interest of the Syrian government on a daily basis”, Araqchi said.

In relevant remarks earlier this month, a prominent Lebanese politician said the western states and their regional Arab allies cannot topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

“Hoping for the overthrow of the Syrian government is useless and approval of international resolutions and regional conspiracies or any other means will not topple the Syrian government”, Head of Lebanon’s al-Tauhid Party Waam Wahhab said in a press conference in Beirut.

“The plot to overthrow the Syrian government is doomed to failure”, he reiterated.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs and foreign-backed militants against the Syrian army and civilians being reported across the country.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

In October 2011, calm was almost restored in most parts of the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies brought the country into chaos through every possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.
