Saudi Arabia Started Supplying Syrian Militants with Heavy Weapons
Saudi Arabia provided the militants in Syria with the first batch of heavy weapons, including anti-tank missiles (Concourse), as the American President Barack Obama decided to “put the West’s military weight behind the militant groups in Syria,” according to “The Daily Telegraph” newspaper.
The newspaper added that this step comes in context with the White House’s decision to lift the unofficial ban on its allies in the Gulf to send heavy weapons to the militant groups in Syria.
The White House had announced last week that the U.S. would send heavy weapons to the militant groups in Syria as it alleged that the Syrian army had used chemical weapons against the opposition.
The British daily pointed out that the Concourse missiles, in contrast with the rocket-propelled grenades, can penetrate the most advanced tanks of the Syrian army.
A Syrian opposing source announced that the militant groups in Syria started using the Concourse missiles as well as other weapons that were sent by Saudi Arabia.
“We will later receive more batches of all kinds of weapons”, the source asserted.
In a related context, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Western countries during the G8 Summit of sending arms to the militant groups in Syria and asserted that “Russia is committed to implement all the military contracts with the Syrian government”.
Russian FM Sergey Lavrov also considered that the Western weapons if sent to Syria would be obtained by Al-Nusra Front.
