US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that he was “driving towards the finish” to secure what would be a historic deal with Iran over its nuclear program as a November 24 deadline looms.
Speaking to reporters in Paris, Kerry said there was “no intention at this point of talking about an extension” as ministers stepped up shuttle diplomacy ahead of the deadline.
“We are not contemplating an extension,” Kerry stressed, ahead of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and outgoing EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton in Oman’s capital of Muscat on November 9-10.
“We are driving towards the finish with the view we are to trying to get it done,” he said.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – Russia, China, France, Britain and the US — plus Germany are in talks to reach a final agreement aimed at resolving the standoff over Tehran’s civilian nuclear work.
The two sides signed a historic interim deal in Geneva last November [2013]. The agreement entered into force on January 20 and expired six months later. In July, Tehran and the six states agreed to extend their discussions until November 24 in a bid to work out a final accord.
