Local Editor

The project to construct a gas pipeline from Iran to Iraq is 95 percent complete, said the spokesman of the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity. Mosaab al-Modares said the remaining portion of the pipeline will be laid once the security of the regions through which it is supposed to traverse is guaranteed. He noted the pipeline will supply gas to al-Mansourieh, al-Sadr and al-Quds refineries.

Military operations are still continuing in some of the regions through which the pipeline will pass.’ The 100-kilometer pipeline stretches from Charmaleh in Ilam province to Naft-Shahr on the Iran-Iraq border.

As stipulated in the contract between the two countries, Iran will initially export 4 mcm of gas to Iraq per day and this figure will later increase to 25 mcm.On completion, the project will solve a major portion of Iraq’s energy problems, particularly its electricity shortage.
