Akhras continues hunger strike for 76th day
PalInfo – Prisoner Maher Al-Akhras entered the 76th day on Saturday of his open hunger strike protesting his administrative detention amid warnings of his martyrdom at any moment.
The prisoner is held in the Israeli Kaplan Hospital in a very dangerous health condition. He refused an offer by the Israeli occupation authorities to complete his current period of administrative detention and insisted on his immediate release.
The Islamic Jihad Movement called on the Palestinian people to launch a large-scale campaign to support Akhras in his fight in which he represents all the administrative detainees.
The Movement strongly condemned in a statement on Saturday the failure of international institutions, organizations and United Nations bodies to work to achieve the demands of the hunger-striking detainee and to pressure the Israeli occupation to release him.
It held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for any harm inflicted on the detainee Akhras who demands his legitimate right to freedom, which is a just and legitimate demand.
Wa’ed Association for Prisoners and Ex-prisoners warned a couple of days ago that Akhras has entered a very dangerous stage and may die at any moment. It also warned of damage to several organs of Akhras’s body due to his refusal to take supplements.
Last Wednesday, his wife announced a hunger strike and sit-in outside Kaplan Hospital in support of her husband in his fight and calling for his immediate release.
Hunger strike until his release or martyrdom
Akhras sent a message in which he said, “My only condition is freedom, either freedom or martyrdom, and in both there is victory for my people and the prisoners.”
The occupation authorities arrested Akhras from Silat al-Dhahr, Jenin district, on 07/27/2020 and ordered his administrative detention for four months. He declared a hunger strike from the first day of his arrest.
Two months after the strike, the Israeli Supreme Court froze the administrative detention decision without releasing him which was rejected by the prisoner and he declared that his strike would continue until victory and his release or martyrdom.
